Savenda has been rolling up its sleeves and leveraging its international background and network
CEO Clever Mpoha’s entrepreneurial boldness can be traced back to his childhood in the rural village of Nzoche, Zambia, and his native Nyikya Tribe, known for their ‘merchandising culture.’ Dr. Mpoha’s journey is considered a testament to the power of determination and a strong business mentality to do better. His journey took him from a rural village to South Africa, where he participated in a business leadership conference, and back to Zambia, where an investment of $1,000 quickly transformed into one of the nation’s most crucial supply management and logistic conglomerates.
Since its inception in 1997, Savenda has been a beacon of hope for the local population. Dr. Mphoa’s first revenue was earned by purchasing and reselling South Korean phones to local markets. From these humble beginnings, Dr. Mpoha and his co-CEO wife, Esther C. Mphoa, made strategic investments during the Zambian mine and power industry boom. Savenda provided laboratory services and products, expanding into equipment and consultancy.
Today, Dr. Mphoa runs a multi-million-dollar business across the energy, telecoms, construction, insurance, agriculture, technology and transport industries. Most recently, Savenda has made significant investments in real estate and construction, alongside transport with the United Bus Co, which is revolutionising passenger transport via bus in Zambia. Concerning real estate, the company is already a significant player in the development of civilian construction, such as roads, schools, private homes and offices.
As agricultural industries remain a priority for both Zambia and Savenda, the construction division aims to broaden the agroindustry by creating structures and roads. The company is currently constructing a large irrigation project that will service water via 18km of pipes to supply water to over 830 hectares of land in the Chirundu District. Upon completion, the project will benefit over 280 houses in the area.
Since the mid-nineties, Savenda’s growth has been hand-in-hand with the nation, simultaneously serving as focal points for local populations. At the heart of Savenda lies a core of corporate responsibility and uncompromising commitment towards Zambians to improve lives socially and economically and help further develop into a middle-income country.
Standing for SAVE Nations Develop Africa, Savenda fully adopts an African-focused approach to build a profitable, global business that, in turn, increases the quality of life and participation in philanthropic work. “When most businesses in Zambia were suffering from recent economic headwinds, my company concentrated on building sustainable platforms to generate future revenues for the country and addressing the rising needs of Zambia.”, explained Dr. Mpoha.
Savenda is a proud Zambian-born company that has successfully integrated its vision of commercial globalisation, where trade is made easy, and economies grow, thanks to the CEO’s clear vision. While growing up, Dr. Mpoha’s mother instilled a humble attitude and encouraged him to believe in the value of doing one’s best while respecting others. With these values in mind, Savenda sponsors several charities throughout Zambia and its neighbours, like Malawi, where in 2023, in light of Cyclone Freddy, it donated 600 blankets for the victims.
Dr. Mpoha empathises with the struggle children face in rural Zambia and became a stout supporter of empowering African entrepreneurs to strengthen his home country and surrounding nations. In light of his philanthropic work, the Thembekile Mandela Foundation appointed Dr. Mpoha to be a member of its advisory board, where, over the years, he has significantly contributed to sports, cultural, social, and humanitarian efforts in Zambia.
Savenda aims to unite Africa through business activities, by serving as a corridor for growing companies and economies across the continent. Through a pan-African approach, Dr. Mpoha is nurturing a dream of positively impacting Zambia and Africa as a whole. Being a global supply chain management company, they’ve retained close connections with a network of countries to procure products internationally and strategically.
Dr. Mpoha’s Zambia and Africa-first business model and personal beliefs have helped transform people’s lives and, in turn, the country he calls home. Savenda will continue to unify markets and integrate with other private sector companies to seek industrialisation and economic prosperity across Africa, expand logistics and globalisation, and offer innovative African-made solutions.
